For most of us, our entire world is turned upside down. Kids are not going to school, employees are not going to work, and many people do not leave their house. As the old adage goes “this too shall pass” but currently we are living in a never imagined situation. Here are four simple tips to help you cope until we can return to a new normal:
Maintain Normal Routines-
The most important way to start your day is to do something productive. Start by making your bed and getting dressed. The first few weeks it was nice to lay in bed all morning and keep your pajamas on all day, but now you need to start to return to normal routines. The same thing you did before this pandemic, get back to a daily schedule. Set time aside for exercise, set time aside to read, set time aside to speak with family/friends on the phone/facetime or Zoom. If you are not currently working, try a new hobby or interest. Take a free online course, maybe learn a new language!
Keep Active-
Your body was used to a routine and part of that routine was some sort of activity or exercise. Get back to it! You might not be able to go to the gym or your favorite yoga class, but that doesn’t mean you stop being active! Get outside, take a walk around the block. Walk, instead of driving to the corner market to pick up milk. Do an online yoga or other online fitness class.
Eat healthy-
Now is the best time to change eating habits. All too often we get busy with our daily life and we put our nutrition last. With the spring season in full bloom, many wonderful fresh fruits and vegetables are available. Instead of hitting the closest fast food drive through, pull out that old cookbook and make a healthy, delicious dinner and use those fresh veggies you picked up!
Stay positive-
The news is full of “doom and gloom” and doesn’t share the positive aspects of life. Avoid watching the nightly news or perusing Facebook or the internet for the latest statistics. Put on some of your favorite music and read the uplifting stories of how people are pulling together in this time of need. Keep politics, fear, and anger out of your life, they are toxic to your mind, body and spirit.
We are in the midst of a time that we have never seen, and probably will never experience again. As humans we fear the unknown and fear the lack of control we currently have in our lives. This is an opportunity to improve your life, let’s not let it go to waste.
